Amber : Though I don’t really have a lot of overseas experience, I guess “personal space” is different for foreigners. Once I was queuing to order some food at MacDonald’s. There was a foreign guy standing in front of me. I wanted to say hi and grab the chance to practice my English, so I touched his shoulder saying “Hi!”. He turned and showed that he was very unpleasant. I said “I am sorry, I just want to say hello.” He told me that it’s quite impolite to have physical touch with someone you are not very familiar with. Then I realize that the way Chinese people show friendliness may offend foreigners.  I’ll be more careful from now on.

【中譯】Amber說: 我雖然沒有許多出國經驗，但我猜”個人空間”的定義對外國人來說不同吧!有一回我在麥當勞排隊點餐，前面是一個老外。我想打個招呼然後可以多多練習英文，我輕拍這老外的肩膀，說了聲”嗨!”他轉過頭來可是感覺他不太高興。我說”抱歉，我只想打個招呼。”他告訴我:對於不熟悉的人有肢體接觸是不禮貌的。於是我才意會到:我們中國人展示親切的方式可能會引起外國人的誤解及觸怒了他們。現在開始我得更謹慎了!

Ben: Well, I quite agree with Amber.  But my situation is more embarrassing than that. During the summer vacation of my third year of university, I attended some language course in Canada. My classmates came from other countries all over the world. I remember once I talked to one of my classmates who came from Europe. I asked him “How much is the salary of your part-time job?” He got a bit annoyed and told me that it’s not an appropriate question. I was embarrassed when he told me off.  However, I was just curious how he could afford this trip to Canada, and the cost of the language course and other expenses in this trip.

Ben說: 我贊同Amber說的。不過我的情形比她還糗呢!我大三暑假到加拿大遊學上語言課程，班上同學來自世界各國。記得有一次我和一個從歐洲來的同學聊天，我問他”你打工的薪水是多少呀?”他有點惱怒地告訴我:問人家賺多少錢是一個很不恰當的問題。當他糾正我的時候，我感到真糗啊!誰知道我只是好奇:他怎樣可以賺到這趟到加拿大遊學的花費，語言課的學費啦、其他花費啦等等…
