【Question】
"Among Taiwanese street food, what are mostly welcomed and what are generally unacceptable by foreigners? And why?"
Claire: I believe the most welcomed Taiwanese street food should be glutinous rice sesame balls (芝麻球) and oyster omelette (蚵仔煎). When I volunteered as one of the translators for accommodating an academic visiting party from the UK, I took my foreign guests to the famous Shi-Lin night market. They were all overwhelmed by these food. One of the girls named Alice showed her great surprise by asking me: “How do they actually stick sesames one by one onto those fried balls? They are really neat!” Everyone laughed of course. Another guy named Josef, after having bought a bag of pan fried buns(生煎包), shouted ”Gosh! I seriously fancy these and want to have them every day”. Inevitably, there are also some food that foreigners feel “unbearable”, such as stinky tofu and pork intestine. They simply cannot be convinced that such a smelly food can be quite tasty and animals’ internal organs are edible. Anyway, Taiwanese street food are so diverse that everyone may find his own paradise. Have you ever tried any? What’s your favorite?
